When sending money within Canada using CAD local transfers, certain banking details are required to make sure the funds reach the right account. Remoly Invoicing supports Electronic Fund Transfers (EFT), which rely on two key numbers:
a 3-digit financial institution number (sometimes called a bank code)
a 5-digit transit number (branch code)
These two codes identify the bank and the branch where the account is held.
It’s always best practice for beneficiaries to confirm these details directly with their bank. If incorrect numbers are used, payments may be sent to the wrong account, and under Canada’s local clearing rules, refunds are not guaranteed.
Routing Numbers in Canada
You may come across a “routing number” for Canadian accounts, but note that it can appear in two different formats:
9-digit format (EFT use): 0YYYXXXXX
Starts with a leading zero
Followed by the 3-digit institution number (YYY)
Ends with the 5-digit transit number (XXXXX)
8-digit format (used on cheques): XXXXX-YYY
5-digit transit number first
Then the 3-digit institution number, separated by a hyphen
Both formats contain the same information, just arranged differently.
Where to Find Institution and Transit Numbers
Cheques – Look at the bottom of a Canadian cheque. You’ll find the 5-digit transit number and 3-digit institution number printed before the account number.
Bank Statements – Many statements also include the transit number (usually right before the account number).
Bank Websites – Most banks publish this information on their official sites for easy reference.
